FAQs

  • What is the difference between SignComp’s Flex and other Flex Face Systems?
Other systems require springs, hooks, eyelets, rods, clamps or other mechanical fixings where SignComp’s Systems simply use the famous Black Clips - The Clips simply click into the frame to tension the skin. This subtle difference leads to huge benefits with time and money saved in production, printing and often install too. To learn more about our Black Clips, click here.
  • What is the correct spacing for the Black Clips?
We recommend the clips to be spaced at no more than 150mm centres. Make sure the top and bottom of your frame have the same number of clips as well as the left and right sides respectively. If installing a Curved Flex Face with a relatively tight radius, you may need to space the clips closer together for that portion of the frame.
  • How do you remove the Black Clips?
Whilst it is effectively impossible to remove the clips by pulling on the vinyl or creating additional tension on the vinyl, they are also extremely easy to remove with a flat-head screwdriver. Watch our Table Demonstration for more information on Black Clips.
  • Can you reuse the Black Clips?
In short, yes. The Black Clips are made from a Delrin-Based Industrial Polycarbonate which makes them extremely durable. To expand on this, there are two nuances to consider. One being your preference when installing – If you are replacing a skin and want to reuse the clips already in the frame, then you can absolutely do that. That may lead to additional time on site though so most will take a newly clipped skin to make install a breeze and use the removed clips on a future project. The second consideration is we strongly advise to use our specially designed Tension Tools. By using our Tension Tools, you can rest assured the skin will be tensioned easily without causing any long-term damage to the clips themselves.
  • Why are there different Tension Tools?
We have three different Tension Tools which are used for different SignComp Flex Systems. Our #5135 Tension Tool is used for our Econoflex and Retro Systems. Our #5137 is used for our new Front Loader Frame and can be used with our Non-Illuminated Frame as well. Our #5138 is specifically for the Non-Illuminated Frame. We strongly advise using the official Tension Tools to ensure the longevity of the Black Clips. To find out more, go to our Black Clip page.
  • What are the correct vinyl sizes and bleeds for my print?
The correct vinyl sizes and bleeds are different depending on what system you are using. If you head to the individual product pages, the recommendations are covered in the technical documentation.
  • What depths do you have in your portfolio?
We have several options for you to chose from. Our Econoflex is available in 196mm, 165mm and 135mm depths as well as a 220mm double-sided option. Our popular Retro Frame comes in at 89mm deep and our new Front Loader is 67mm. Our shallowest frame, the Non-Illuminated Frame, is a very slim 30mm. With all of those options, we are sure to have you covered.
  • When manufacturing, how should I space the Back Supports with the Econoflex System?
There are two main rules to follow. One is to not go beyond a 1 metre between Back Supports. This is both vertically and horizontally. In instances where boxes are more than 3m high, Back Supports should be even closer than 1m. Contact us for more advice. Secondly, when you build a box in sections, you must ensure a Back Support in installed directly either side of the split. This is important for strength during both install and transport. For more information, go to our Econoflex page.
  • Do high winds move or distort the vinyl?
Firstly, this will depend on the placing and size of the sign. But let’s get into the details… We recommend you use reinforced vinyl for your external Flex Face signage. This will prevent permanent distortion over years of inclement weather and ensures the tension of your print is maintained. SignComp systems have been tested to hundreds of mph in wind tunnels so, we are confident our system can handle an array of stormy weather. That being said Flex Face is just that, flexible, and you can see some movement in the vinyl when high winds hit. As a rule of thumb, we would say the following… For small signs, say up to 2m in height, you should see little to no movement in the vinyl. For medium signs, say up to 4m in height, you will see some movement in the vinyl. For larger signs, 4m and above, the vinyl starts to emulate a large sail and the larger you go, the more movement you may see. For very large application we recommend using wire behind the vinyl to prevent it from bowing in significantly during high winds. For these applications we would recommend you discuss with us or your trade supplier who will be able to give specific recommendations.
  • How big can you go with a SignComp Flex System?
How long is a piece of string? There are many aspects to exactly how large a sign can go but there is no doubt that if you want a large and seamless sign, then Flex Face is the best option. The SignComp Flex System can work at huge scales. We even have examples of our Non-Illuminated at 25x45m. 99% of flex signs do not necessarily need special considerations and a good sign maker and installation team will suffice. For the 1% of extra-large projects, the main considerations revolve around weight and logistics of transport and install. These considerations may need the advice of your signage manufacturer, installer and possibly even structural engineers.
  • Are your profiles available in different colours?
We at SignComp only supply Mill Finish Material. It is difficult to stock colours given our product is used for dozens of very specific brand colours. Most sign makers have their own powder coating facilities/suppliers so most will use those avenues.
  • Do you offer a readymade service?
We do no manufacturing here at SignComp – We are purely distributors of the systems themselves. We do though have a great selection of trade supplying Partners that can manufacture for you – click here to take a look.
  • What is the difference between EASITEX and other Tension Fabric Systems?
EASITEX is a tension fabric system that does not require any sewing of a silicone strip. This subtle difference leads to many benefits including faster lead times, higher reliability during production and installation, better sustainability and it’s more cost effective as well. Win, win, win and win! For a brief overview, look at the video below:
  • Is there an EASITEX Tension Tool?
Yes, there is. We have a specially designed rounded tension tool to make installation even more of a breeze. Our tests showed it helped reduce install times by 50% compared to traditional squeegees/applicators. Do not fret though, if you are on site and find yourself without a tension tool, you can use squeegees/applicators or similar.
  • What are the correct fabric sizes and bleeds for my print?
We recommend adding a 30mm bleed around your print. In other words, add 60mm to the width and height of the print in comparison to the size of the frame. This amount strikes a balance between having a generous amount to play with and the longevity of our internal grip-strip. You can also, depending on the situation, go to site with an even bigger bleed and cut away the excess during the installation process. Having said this, we would only recommend this approach with larger signs.
  • What type and weight of material should I use?
During testing, 90%+ of fabrics designed for signage should work with our system. A couple of exceptions may be very heavy blockout materials and extremely light illuminated fabrics. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to give an exact answer as there are many nuances with fabric types, weight and printing methods. We advise testing prints with a sample frame that we can supply. That way, you can settle on a material and printing method that works for you and your business.
  • Can EASITEX be used outside?
EASITEX is not designed to be used externally. If you would like a large scale, flexible faced sign that can deal with all weathers, we would advise looking at our world famous Flex Face Systems.
  • What depths do you have in your portfolio?
Currently, our portfolio consists of single sided option at 25mm, 50mm, 80mm and 120mm. We also have double sided options at 60mm and 100mm. We are always eager to expand our range so, if you have a large demand for an alternative depth, please let us know.
  • How big can you go with EASITEX?
We have seen successful examples of our EASITEX system going up to 5x5m. We believe the system would work beyond this size but for internal textile signage, this is pretty much as big as it gets. Anything beyond this size is starting to enter the realm of our Flex Face Systems.
  • Are your profiles available in different colours?
We supply EASITEX in both Mill Finish for your own painting and Silver Anodised for immediate use. It is difficult to stock colours given our product is used for dozens of very specific brand related colours. Most sign makers have their own powder coating facilities/suppliers so most will use those avenues.
  • Do you offer a readymade service?
We are not sign makers here at SignComp so do not offer a readymade service. In EASITEX’s case though, we do offer Kits that are cut-to-size and delivered flat packed. Just let us know the size and we'll generate a quote.
  • How do I know what LEDs to use?
In short, ask us! Let us know the signs you are illuminating, their dimensions and fascia type, and we can generate a layout and quote for you nice and quickly. The layout will show what type, how many and the spacing of the LEDs for any given sign. The quote will show the overall costs for illuminating said sign(s). Simple!
  • What are lumens?
The visible light of a light source is called a lumen. The higher the rating, the brighter the light source will appear. When it comes to illuminating signage, lumens are an important measurement to consider. Brighter isn’t always better as you must factor in other elements like positioning, external light sources, planning permissions and so on. Generally though, an internal sign that is competing with a lot of artificial light should be aiming for a high lumen output. Conversely, lower lumen levels can work with an external sign that’s illuminated at night.
  • What are Kelvins?
Kelvin is a scientific measurement for the colour of visible light, expressed in units of absolute temperature. The higher the number of Kelvin, the whiter or ‘cooler’ the light is. The lower the number, the more yellow or ‘warmer’ the light is. For internally illuminated signage, the most common colour temperature on the market is 6500k, often described as ‘daylight’ white – this is deemed as a good neutral white for illuminating imagery and branding without effecting said design. It is ok to go cooler or warmer than this, but normally this is done to create an ‘effect’. For example, a retail store trying to create an intimate feel with low level lighting may decide to opt for warmer colour temperatures in their signage.
  • What is efficacy?
Efficacy in relation to LEDs refers to the ratio of luminous flux (lumens) to power (Watts), measured in lumens per watt (lm/W). The higher the efficacy, the more ‘efficient’ the LED is with converting power into light. So, for example: Take an LED module that emits 400 lumens and requires 4 Watts power it. 400lm ÷ 4W = 100 lm/W. Now take a module that emits 340 lumens but only requires 2 Watts to power. 340lm ÷ 2W = 170 lm/W. Yes, the second module has a lower lumen output but is far more efficient with the power it uses. In recent times, efficacy has become a more important metric to ensure end users are getting more bang for their buck.
  • Do your LED products have warranties?
Yes they do. Ranging between 5 and 10 years, you can rest assured that the products we sell are built to last. In order to check a products specific warranty, please find the relevant datasheet here.
  • What is your cut-off point for ordering?
We don’t have a strict cut-off point for orders – we will do what we can to dispatch your order on the same day but we can never guarantee it. To increase the chances of same day dispatch, we recommend metal orders are placed before 12.00pm and LED orders are placed before 2.00pm. We have a high success rate of same day dispatch but on the odd occasion we can’t, we will inform you of your order's progress.
  • How do you deliver the goods to me?
This depends on the nature of your order. LED only orders and orders for metal under 1.6m will be shipped overnight with APC. Small to medium metal orders up to 6m will be shipped overnight with DX Medium to large metal orders will be shipped with a ‘shared’ carrier. ETA will be advised. Large to very large metal order will be shipped on a dedicated carrier. ETA will be advised.
  • Where are your products sourced from?
Our products are sourced from several locations but no matter where, we always demand high quality materials and components. Most extrusion is purchased from the UK and EU with a small amount coming from Malaysia. Other product ranges have several sources so if you need to know more on this front, please contact us.
