- VL5: The New Benchmark in LEDs for Signage
With next-generation optics, higher efficiency, and smarter design, the VL5 Range sets a new standard for signage and display illumination. At SignComp Europe, we are a proud distributor of SloanLED and are excited to introduce VL5 to the UK signage industry. That extra performance does come with a small caveat. As Paul Koch, Marketing Manager Europe at SloanLED, explains: “Because VL5 looks so similar to standard LED modules, many signmakers initially underestimate its power. You need far fewer modules than you’d expect. At first, it may even feel like something isn’t right—but once you test the illumination levels, you’ll quickly see how potent it is.” Smarter Power, Smarter Installations Two big advancements for the VL5 Range are the introduction of Constant Current Technology within the modules and an increased availability of 24V options across models. For large-scale applications or signage installed at higher elevations, the ability to run longer wiring with fewer connections and reduced voltage drop makes a huge difference in both performance, efficiency and reliability. Designed for Performance and Reliability VL5 redefines LED lighting performance thanks to its precision-engineered micro-prism ASGM lens. The result: an ultra-wide radiation pattern that delivers powerful, uniform illumination with fewer modules required. This translates into 30% wider spacing, reduced installation time, and lower costs - without sacrificing brightness. Other key benefits include: Fast installation with a continuous release liner and Constant Current Tech Long-term reliability with a rated lifetime of 54,000+ hours (L80) Flexibility with a full range of colour temperatures (3000K to 7200K) Versatility with the capability of illuminating from 30-300mm depths Choice of 12V or 24V versions to suit different applications Peace of mind with SloanLED’s industry-leading “Life of Sign” warranty VL5 & The LEDWizard 8 To take full advantage of VL5’s performance, SloanLED provides LEDWizard 8, the industry’s leading layout and estimation software. With LEDWizard, signmakers can calculate in advance the number of modules required and exactly where to place them within any given project. This ensures optimal brightness, uniformity, and energy efficiency while preventing costly over- or underestimating. By combining the power of VL5 with the precision of LEDWizard 8, signmakers gain total confidence in both design and installation, saving valuable time and resources on every project. The SloanLED & SignComp Europe Partnership SignComp Europe is proud to be one of the key distributors of SloanLED. Not only does SloanLED bring decades of experience (founded in 1957, pioneering LED technology since the 1970s), it is also driven by a principle of employing the latest technology to develop quality lighting products. Couple that with SignComp Europe's industry-leading customer service and logistical expertise, the partnership is perfectly poised to take UK signage by storm. Some technical reasons why SloanLED stands out: Proven quality: An industry leader, producing safe, reliable lighting solutions with ISO 9001:2015 certification for quality management and LM79 product testing. Sustainability: Products are designed to reduce energy costs, use mercury-free lighting, and are delivered in recycled or recyclable packaging. Reliability: By using only the highest calibre components, solutions are built to last, delivering exceptional performance with some products lasting up to 100,000 hours. I nnovation: They design, test, and deliver innovative solutions that factor in the total cost of ownership, maximum ROI, and a positive customer experience. The Next Evolution in Signage Lighting SloanLED’s VL5 is more than just a product range - it’s a new benchmark in signage lighting. When combined with SignComp Europe’s experience, it gives you the power to create bold, flawless illumination while lowering overall system costs. - Front Loader: The New Zero-Clearance Flex Face Solution
When space is tight and access is awkward, traditional Flex Face Systems can sometimes fall short. Our brand-new Front Loader changes everything! Purpose-built as a problem-solving, wall-mounted flex frame, it lets you install bold, full-bleed graphics with zero clearance around the sign – This includes within recesses, internal corners, cladding and even bustling high streets. The result is a more versatile SignComp Flex Face portfolio than ever before. Why We Introduced the Front Loader (And Why You’ll Love It) Every sign project is different. Some demand slim profiles, others require quick installs, and many are constrained by shopfront recesses or neighbouring structures. The Front Loader was engineered to tackle those headaches. Most flex face signs are large-scale, illuminated and situated on a standard wall, cladding or steel structure. As a result, products tend to be deeper and designed in certain ways - The Front Loader though opens up a whole new host of possibilities with its design and versatility. Bottom line: If you’ve ever thought “there’s just no room for a flex face here,” the Front Loader is your answer. Key Features at a Glance Mounts directly to the wall – faster installs, fewer parts, lower labour costs. Zero-clearance friendly – perfect for recesses, internal corners, and tight high-street areas. Illuminate at 70 mm depth – ideal for small to medium, high-impact lightboxes. Two cover screw positions – choose the best option based on access and clearance. Frame Support pieces for large applications – maintain peace of mind on big builds. Uses the famous SignComp Black Clip - seamless integration with the rest of our Flex Face range. Typical Applications Retail high streets & shopping centres where space and access are limited. Recessed shopfronts and internal corners that traditionally block frame access. Refurbishment projects where existing structures can’t be altered or removed. Tight interior environments (corridors, atriums) needing bold, large-scale messaging. Cladding integration so your signs are seamlessly flush with the wall. How It Works (In Simple Steps) Measure & cut the Front Loader frame to size. Ship mitred pieces to site, not fully built box sections. Fix frame directly to the wall—no bulky sub-frame needed. Install illumination (optional) inside the 70 mm cavity for vibrant night-time visibility. Tension the skin using the tried-and-tested Black Clip, just like the rest of our Flex Face systems. Use the preferred screw cover option to suit the available clearance. That’s it. Clean, quick, and professional. Stronger Together: A More Versatile Flex Face Portfolio The Front Loader doesn’t replace your favourite SignComp frames—it complements them. By slotting into the tightest niches, it expands what’s possible with flex face signage, giving you a complete toolkit: Non-illuminated Frame – 30mm depth and complete with a clip-on cover New Front Loader – 70mm and with all the benefits listed above Retro Frame – A versatile framing solution at 90mm depth Econoflex – The world-famous lightbox suite that comes in 135mm, 165mm, 196mm depths and even has a double-sided solution! Together, they form a cohesive suite that lets you say “yes” to more projects. Frequently Asked Questions Can I illuminate the Front Loader? Yes. Its 70 mm depth accommodates illumination for small to medium, high-street-style signs. What if my sign is very large? Use our Frame Support pieces to add peace of mind on larger applications. Will my team need new tools or clips? The Front Loader uses the same Black Clip that’s standard across the SignComp Flex Face range, but you will need a new Tension Tool – the 5137 to be precise. Is installation really possible with zero clearance? Yes. That’s the core advantage—install directly against walls or inside recesses without leaving a gap. So, if you’re facing a tight install or just want the cleanest full-bleed finish possible, the Front Loader is ready. - Celebrating 100 Years of Brownings: 1925 - 2025
In July 2025, Hull-based Brownings proudly marked its 100th year in business. Here, we trace back to its storied past to see how it is now a leading trade-only signage specialist. The Early Years Founded in 1925 by Walter Willoughby Browning as Browning’s Dental Laboratory, the company initially crafted dentures. However, a decline in demand in the 1950s prompted a pivotal shift. Browning invented and patented Plastifol, a material that enabled the production of medical training aids and novelty practical-joke products, which were sold worldwide and remained in production until 2021. Alongside this, Brownings became the UK’s first official distributor of Perspex, crafting everything from machine guards to leaflet holders. Evolving Ownership & Identity The business was then acquired by Steve Crowley in 1993, who transformed it into a signage manufacturer after Walter Browning’s passing. In 2007, the company officially rebranded simply as Brownings, finding its niche as a trade-only signage specialist. Brownings then became an official distributor and converter for flex face signage solutions through its partnership with SignComp Europe . Combining SignComp’s supply of Flex Face, LEDs and EASITEX with Brownings' expertise and commitment to quality, the relationship has only gone from strength to strength over the past 20 years. Photo Credits: Next | BirdsEye | Paradise Island | AG Today, the business is led by Mike Gentle, who joined as Managing Director in 2001, along with Production Director Dean Harrison, Sales Director Richard Vincent, and Sales & Marketing Manager Bradley Robinson. In-house excellence, bespoke solutions Brownings takes pride in crafting all its signage in-house, offering bespoke solutions and speedy turnaround for clients. Robinson states that “Anonymity is our speciality. We manufacture for some of the best-known high street retailers and hospitality venues, but most end-users will never know we exist.” Summary From crafting dentures to pioneering signage solutions, Brownings have consistently adapted to changing markets while holding firm to their core identity. As Richard Vincent put it, “We’re just the current custodians of a great business. Hopefully we’ll see Brownings through to the next 100 years.” Their hands-on, bespoke approach, paired with an unwavering commitment to quality and customer service, has shaped a legacy and set the stage for another 100 years of success. - The Ultimate Guide to LED Sign Illumination
How to choose brighter, greener and longer‑lasting lighting for every sign project. Why focus on LEDs for signage? LED modules have become the benchmark for illuminating signage – including built‑up letters, flex face signs and internal lightboxes. Why? Because they deliver high brightness, low running costs and long lifespans. Before diving deeper, it is important to touch base on some terminology around LEDs . Term What it means Why it matters to signs LED (Light‑Emitting Diode) A semiconductor that emits light when current flows through it. Smaller, cooler and far more energy‑efficient than fluorescent tubes. Lumens (lm) A measurement of total visible light output. Higher lumens = brighter sign. Aim high for indoor retail spaces; dial back for night‑time external signage. Wattage (W) Electrical power consumed. Lower wattage cuts electricity bills and allows for smaller power supplies. Efficacy (lm/W) Lumens ÷ Watts: light produced per watt. A core efficiency metric - today’s best modules exceed 170 lm/W. Kelvin (K) Colour temperature of the light. 6500 K = “daylight” white. Choose cooler whites (6000–7000 K) to make graphics pop; warmer whites (3000–4000 K) for boutique ambience. Pro tip: When comparing modules, look at all three numbers together (lumens, watts, efficacy). A very bright module that guzzles power may cost more to run than a slightly dimmer, ultra‑efficient alternative. Benefits of LED illumination for signs When it comes to lighting up signs, LED technology continues to set the standard -and for good reason. Here’s why: 🌱 Energy & carbon savings LEDs are incredibly efficient, using up to 70% less energy than traditional fluorescent or neon options. That means lower running costs and a smaller carbon footprint -helping businesses stay on top of both sustainability goals and energy bills. 📏Slimmer, Lighter Sign Designs Because LEDs produce less heat and don’t require bulky tubes, modules are small. Couple this with ever improving lens technology, boxes can be made shallower and lighter - good news for all signage installations. 💡Uniform brightness & long life Modern optics spread light up to 175° so you can use fewer modules and still achieve perfectly even faces. Many premium LEDs continue to perform at 70%+ performance after 100,000 hours of use , delivering years of low-maintenance lighting. How to choose the right LED module With hundreds of LEDs on the market, it helps to go through a process of elimination to establish which product is best for your project. Inside or out? Internal rated LEDs cannot be used outside – eliminate a large portion of products with this simple bit of information. Voltage requirements? If there is a technical requirement, find a product that suits. If there isn’t one, 12v is great for smaller applications and 24v is efficient for large-scale signage. Colour temperature? Some brands require cool and crisp – some need subtle and warm. Continue to refine your selection with these details. Signage type and materials? LEDs are often designed for specific applications. Channel letters with an acrylic face may need different LEDs to a large-scale Flex Face sign. What are the dimensions? Generally, slim signage will use smaller LEDs more frequently – deeper signage will tend to use fewer, larger modules. Is there a lumen target? An internal shopfront will need a significantly brighter sign than an external, road-facing sign. Consider legal restrictions and the surrounding area. Is there a budget? If there are strict budgets, some LEDs may be more suitable for your project. Having said that, quality products are always more cost-effective in the long run. Let’s take a look at two proven LED brands we stock at SignComp Europe for the UK & EU signage trade. - Say hello to the new SignComp Europe
You may have noticed that SignComp Europe has recently had makeover, featuring a brand-new website and brand identity. We felt our former logo, colours and fonts didn’t represent who we are anymore. Today, we’re delighted to unveil our new look. Why now? We’ve come a long way since SignComp Europe set up shop 30 years ago. Back then, we distributed a couple Flex Face products, now we have a full suite of products to cover all your Flex needs. In recent years, we have added our EASITEX textile signage system and a selection of high-quality LEDs to our portfolio as well. As we look to the future, we want to continue to evolve and develop our company and, in that vein, we felt it was time to update our look to better reflect where we are heading! Our logo The aim was evolution, not revolution when modernising our logo. We wanted to remain recognisable to those who know us and so dozens of logo variations were produced before making the ultimate decision. Here is the final outcome: The original icon was based on one of our components placed together to form an ‘S’. We decided our new icon should instead touch on the most significant aspect of our systems – the flexible material used for the face of the sign. Parallel to that, with the advancements in manufacturing techniques, almost any shape is possible with our Signage Systems and so the soft curves in place of the angled shapes represents the advancement of what is possible today. And last but not least, the icon is reminiscent of an arrow as we’re a forward-thinking company, committed to sustainable growth. Our colours We’ve dropped the red from our old logo and revitalised the blue palette by adding a few more shades. The transition from a dark to a light shade of blue highlights how we’ve steadily evolved over the years. Logo variations Catering to our branding needs, we offer two variations with either a navy or white background, to ensure that our logo stands out in every application. Typography We’ve chosen Malgun Gothic as our font. ‘Malgun’ means clear , and the fonts’ even inter-character spacing, and visual centre line ensures we have consistent readability across our logos, headings and many more. It’s clean and simple - how we like our systems to operate. Our website Whilst our old website served its purpose, it started to show signs of age so, it needed an upgrade as well. The new aesthetics and accessible information are to ensure that every visitor understands who we are and what we offer. So, here’s what’s new: The resources hub Starting with our favourite – the resources hub. We offer educational materials, from downloadable PDFs, FAQs and instructional videos from the SignComp team. We needed more than our live chat function and product pages , so adding accessible and comprehensive resources to our website was top of the list. Blogs & Case studies This addition will allow you to dive into some of the best projects and discover real world examples of our products. The case studies show the impact of our offerings, how our products function, and what results can be achieved from our solutions. The positive testimonials from satisfied clients are key in showing the values we bring to the table. User-friendly design Our content became disorganised on our old website, so we had to address these issues (after all, nobody likes mess!) With clean layouts, it’s easy for our users to navigate and find the information they need. Improved product pages Our high-quality products deserved individual pages. Not only do they look good, but they give you all the information you need. We’ve incorporated Overviews as well as improved technical documentation, upgraded photos of real-world examples, videos etc. Recognising our partners At SignComp Europe, we’re proud to be partnering with reputable businesses in the signage industry. Our partners directory page has a cohesive layout which makes it simple to explore companies that find solutions using our products. Each partner has their own digital ‘business card’ with a micro interaction that allows you to explore their logo, contact and key information. Search bar We were holding back users from exploring all we had to offer efficiently - That’s why it was vital to add the search bar. We hope this element improves usability, so you find what you’re looking for quickly. That means less clicking around! Live chat feature We know that our customers are busy people. If you are on the go, or have a question for us, our live chat feature will enable you to contact our friendly team in real time, no matter where you are. New look, same SignComp Europe The big question is, what does this mean for our customers? Whilst our look and feel has changed, SignComp Europe’s ethos and work ethic stays the same. We’ve not moved house, just simply refurbished to reflect our growth in the last 30 years. So, whether you’ve known us for a while or new to us let us know what you think!
- Tactile Textiles - The Best Way To Stand Out
The retail landscape faced many challenges throughout 2020. Stores with bricks and mortar locations saw periods of no in-store browsing and a distinct consumer shift to eCommerce. As we look ahead to the coming 12 months, retailers will be thinking about how to entice people back through the doors – and high-quality in-store signage should be top of the list. Striking signage has always been an effective way to entice customers through the door and then inspire them to buy. With the rise of online shopping being a hub of convenience, the retail experience must be nurtured into more of an experiential journey - one that varied and interesting signage can help achieve. There is a great opportunity ahead to use signage not only to attract and retain customers but to also offer a multi-sensory experience, something that online shopping cannot offer and something customers will return for. Endless possibilities with textile signage With the decreasing costs revolved around textiles and printing technologies, we have seen an uptake in retailers wanting to enhance their brand with large and bold visuals in their storefront. Textile signage, or ‘soft’ signage as it’s also known, opens up the possibilities of print with options of scalability whilst offering a tactile experience. Soft signage is durable, is easy to ship, creates a striking graphic impact and is low maintenance, making it ideal for multiple location rollouts or in high-traffic areas. Choices of substrate mean brand owners can create looks that offer real ‘kerb appeal’ – woven textile, polyester, cotton, frontlit or backlit, satin or matte, eco-friendly materials and dyes, mesh fabrics, superwide seamless formats – the possibilities are endless. Or, they can simply choose the most cost-effective material for the job in hand. A new textile signage solution All of these visual retail concepts can be created with EASITEX, the evolution in signage systems and the newest movement in textile signage that simplifies installation. Traditionally, tension fabric systems used in retail have required a silicone strip sewn to the edge, so there are longer lead times, higher pricing and no room for measurement errors. EASITEX breaks away from complicated edge fabrication, with its seamless tensioning system that’s easy to install, adjust and replace, as often as new visual branding is required. Do away with silicone! EASITEX uses an internal “grip strip” that means each time a graphic is changed, no sewing is required thus saving time, money and hassle for every print change. Print service providers will find it a simpler solution to outsourcing complex signage jobs and adjustments can easily be made on site. Many retailers are looking at ways to reduce their environmental impact and reduce wastage. Without the need for complex print finishes like sewing that use non-recyclable silicone, EASITEX offers a more environmentally friendly option compared to traditional systems. The textiles used can often be recycled and be printed with biodegradable or ‘low impact’ inks. Combine this with energy saving LED systems to help signage pop in an environmentally friendly way The versatility you need EASITEX allows for large, seamless panels and display graphics can easily be switched out as required without the hassle of sewing and inevitable sizing issues. - An Introduction To Flex Face Signage
Flex Face Signage is our bread and butter; but for those of you who aren’t all that clued up when it comes to this type of signage system, here’s a quick introduction to help you learn a little more What is Flex Face Signage? Flex Face Signage is a type of system that is typically used for outdoor sign applications such as retail parks, shop fronts and other large customer facing signage. The name ‘flex face’ derives from the primary feature of the system; a tensioned flexible PVC banner substrate that stretches across the face of the sign to create something that resembles the skin of a drum. Flex faces are commonly referred to as “skins” within the industry. The main benefits of using flex over rigid materials and media is scalability and safety. You can print on a much larger scale with PVC as opposed to acrylic or composite panels. Additionally, you can ‘weld’ PVC prints together to create an even larger print that is seamless once installed - something that cannot be achieved with rigid substrates. The SignComp Systems are guaranteed against blowout which should be a great comfort in times of inclement weather conditions and high winds. Another benefit of using flex is that transportation to site and stocking of printing media is far easier due to its ‘flexible’ nature. With our SignComp Clip System , installation is a breeze with no need for rods, hooks or eyelets - you simply attach our famous black clip to your printed/decorated skin and click into the frame. The boxes themselves are made from aluminium and are extremely robust and durable. With different depth profiles available within the range and internal structures to compliment them, it is common for external flex signage to be in situ for decades with the skin alone being changed on a regular basis. The Different Types of Flex Face Signs Flex Face signage can come in both illuminated boxes and non-illuminated frames, depending on your requirements. We take a look at each type and their differences below: Illuminated Frames Flex Face Light Boxes are the deeper of the two systems with the extra depth facilitating the installation of internal illumination to light up the decorated skin from behind. With the PVC skin material specifically manufactured to be translucent, you can easily illuminate the signs graphics, allowing you stand out from the crowd. Whereas square or rectangular ‘box’ systems are usually the preferred choice, our Econoflex and Retro Systems can also be manufactured to create many other shapes , including lettering, to make your project stand out from the crowd. Key features of the lightbox systems: Completely outdoor and weather resistant – Water resistant guaranteed against blowout. PVC substrate material perfect for larger scale signage and ease of transportation. Light but very robust aluminium profiles for longevity of your signage. Custom shapes, sizes and metal colour finishes possible. Illuminate your signage with energy saving, environmentally friendly, LED modules. Non-Illuminated Frames Our non-illuminated fascia frame system is extremely popular, and consists of only 2 elements, the frame and the clip-on cover. The non-illuminated system is much slimmer with a depth of only 30mm and is fixed straight to the wall. This type of flex sign is extremely robust, in fact it is the strongest in the SignComp range. Non-illuminated flex signs have been used all over the world, in a wide range of applications, from airports through to football stadiums – a perfect solution for a large-scale sign that does not require illumination. Where can Flex Face Signs be Installed? Flex Face signage systems are predominantly for outdoor use, but of course, can be used internally too. With a variety of robust profiles, they are extremely versatile and highly suited for use in the following areas: - Retail Parks - External Shop Fronts - Mobile Units - Sports Stadiums/Facilities - Airports, Train Stations and Bus Stations - Public Attractions Whether you opt for an illuminated or non-illuminated, SignComp guarantee to have a system to suit your application.
